YXUS Ensemble brings Estonian music to the Nordwind Festival

This week, YXUS Ensemble gives two concerts in Germany: on November 26 in Hamburg Kampnagel and November 27 in Dresden Hellerau. Concerts are part of the Nordwind Festival , that presents work of contemporary artists from the Nordic and Baltic countries, the thematic focus this year is the relationship between Europe and Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. Concert Synergie program consists of Veljo Tormis’s Ten Haikus, Malle Maltis’s A Match, Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Synergie, Galina Grigorjeva’s The Last Sign, Mirjam Tally’s Winter Island, Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina, Fratres, Vater unser, Mozart-Adagio, Es sang vor langen Jahren, Spiegel im Spiegel and My Heart‘s in the Highlands. Yxus Ensemble’s musicians are Harry Traksmann (violin), Laur Eensalu (viola), Leho Karin (cello), Marrit Gerretz-Traksmann (piano) and Iris Oja (alto).

As the predecessor of YXUS Ensemble can be considered NYYD Ensemble, which was formed in 1993 for performing at the international contemporary music festival NYYD ’93. The actual size of the ensemble varies according to the needs of the program, but the core of it is formed by a string quartet that started to perform together in NYYD Ensemble. The initiator and artistic leader of the group is cellist Leho Karin. Under the name of YXUS Ensemble the group performed first time in 2013.

Concert is supported by the Estonian Cultural Endowment and Eesti Kontsert.
