Edmar Tuul

Edmar Tuul
is a recognized and beloved Estonian conductor and cultural organizer.

Edmar has studied conducting under the guidance of Tõnu Kaljuste, Neeme Järvi, Kristjan Järvi, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Hirvo Surva, Colin Metters, Achim Holubi, Lukas Groen and Leonid Grin.

In 2007, Edmar Tuul, together with his friend and renowned composer Rasmus Puur, founded the youth orchestra Reaalmažoor, which ended its activities in May 25, 2017. The Tallinn Board of Education named Edmar Tuul as the „Tallinn's Young Cultural Worker of  2009“, and Realmažoor received the Tallinn Sports and Youth Board's „Great Deeds“ recognition award „For the Youth of Tallinn and the Great Deeds of the Youth of Tallinn“. 6 CDs have been released with the orchestra: Üle Müüri (debut album), Pipi (in collaboration with Nele-Liis Vaiksoo), Lumevalgus, Koju, Olla vaid kloun (in collaboration with Jassi Zahharov) and Hetked (a recording of Rasmus Puur's compositions).

In 2016, Edmar made his debut before the Baltic Sea Philharmonic, being conductor Kristjan Järvi's assistant in connection with the orchestra's „Baltic Sea Landscapes“ concert tour. In May 2015, Edmar was the assistant conductor in Estonia's biggest musical production of recent times, Pärt/Wilson The Passion of Adam (chief conductor maestro Tõnu Kaljuste).

In May 2017, Edmar gave his first full-length concert with the Estonian National Male Choir „How Would You Live...“. With this concert, Edmar completed his studies in the field of conducting at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater (Prof. Tõnu Kaljuste). The feedback from the examination committee stated: „Without a doubt, Edmar has made a mark it shows that he will be a very respectable young conductor in the future; a characteristic feature of Edmar he exudes energy, the will to create.

In the beginning of 2018, Edmar founded a new collective orchestra Ventum. The collective has performed as part of special projects at public and closed events. In 2021, the Ventum orchestra collaborated with Supernova by releasing Ivo Linna's CD Taevastähtedes Tee. In May 2018, Edmar made his debut in front of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra at the invitation of maestro Paul Mägi.

In addition to his duties as the director of Viimsi Music School, Edmar was the curator of the 2023 youth song and dance festival in Tallinn. In the summer of 2019, Edmar was the chief conductor of the XX Dance Celebration „Minu arm“. In the autumn of the same year, the debut concerts with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra took place. In the summer of 2017, Edmar was the conductor of the male choirs at the „Mina jään“ XII Youth Song Celebration. Since 2019, Edmar has been chief conductor of the Academic Women's Choir of Tallinn University of Technology.

In addition to his ensembles, Edmar has conducted the Gstaad Festival Symphony Orchestra, Graz Chamber Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, Estonian National Male Choir, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Pärnu City Orchestra, Estonian Youth Symphony Orchestra, Estonian Music Teachers' Symphony Orchestra, mixed choir of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater, Estonian Sinfonietta and several other choirs.


Maestro Kristjan Järvi has reviewed Edmar's work as follows: „He is one of the most outstanding young Estonian conductors. Fantastic figure. I should say really one of the best young Estonian conductors.“ (Estonian Classical Radio 20.07.2019).

Edmar was the artistic director of the Estonian program of the 2022 student singing festival Gaudeamus. In the same year, Edmar was the author of the idea and the artistic director of the cohesion concert „What Is a Person?“. The organization and content of the concert have been reviewed as follows: „It's pretty crazy what Edmar Tuul, Piret Aus, the Estonian Chamber of Disabled People, and others are organizing. It's also a kind of experiment, but an unspeakably beautiful experiment,“ president Kersti Kaljulaid. „This is the most important cultural event of the coming year,“ Minister of Social Protection Signe Riisalo.
