Lilyan Kaiv

Lilyan Kaiv has studied choral conducting at the Tartu Heino Eller Music School with Alo Ritsing. She continued her studies under the supervision of Professor Toomas Kapten at the Estonian Academy of Music, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in 1998 and a Master’s degree in 2002. In 2005, she earned a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting with Professor Jüri Alperten. She has participated in the master classes of Gabor Hollerung, Vladimir Ponkin, Eri Klas, Neeme Järv, Alexander Dimitriev, Neil Thomson and Jorma Panula.

Lilyan Kaiv has taken part in several conducting competitions. She has been the finalist of the Blue Danube competition for opera conductors in Bulgaria (2013, 2015) and International Competition for Opera Conductors Luigi Mancinelli (2014, Italy). She has won the 1st prize at the international competition of young conductors in Riga (1997, 2000, Latvia), an international competition of young conductors in Tallinn (2002), the 2nd prize at the International Jorma Panula Conducting Competition in Vaasa (2003, Finland) and the 3rd prize at the national competition of young choral conductors (2004) and has received the best conductor title at the Tuljak choral competition (1996).

Since 2000, Lilyan Kaiv teaches conducting at the Tartu Heino Eller Music School and conducts choir’s symphony orchestra Eller Sinfonietta. Additionally, she conducts Tartu St. Mary’s Church Choir (since 2018) and Tartu St. Mary’s Chamber Orchestra (since 2019). She has conducted several choirs in Tartu and Tallinn, has been the assistant conductor of the Tallinn Music High School Symphony Orchestra (1996–2002) and artistic director of several song festivals of Estonian counties.

Lilyan Kaiv has cooperated several orchestras, including Dohnanyi Orchestra Budafok (Ungary), St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, Pärnu City Orchestra and Estonian National Youth Symphony Orchestra and Latvian State Choir Latvija. She has conducted Carl Orff’s opera Moon (2005) and Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen (2006) performed several large scale vocal works (Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, Beethovens’ Mass in C, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Poulenc’s Gloria, Bacalov’s Misa tango, Olav Ehala’s musical Thil Eulenspiegel, Miina Härma’s song play The Daughter of Mother Sward etc).

Lilyan Kaiv has twice received a Gustav Ernesaks Scholarship (1996, 1999). She is a member of the music agency Vida Art.
