Mirjam Kerem

Mirjam Kerem is a violinist and a teacher.

During 1961–1967 she studied at the Paide Children´s Music School with Aino Tamm. She graduated from Tallinn Music High School in 1971 having studied with Harry Rikandi. In 1976 she graduated from Vladimir Alumäe´s violin and quartet class at the Tallinn State Conservatory. Between 1976–1978 she studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Dmitri Tsyganov and finished her Ph.D. in 2007 at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre where here subject for her thesis was Carl Flesch´s views on violin fingering techniques, their actuality, and implementation in contemporary violin playing („Carl Fleschi vaated viiulimängu sõrmestusküsimustele, nende aktuaalsus ja rakendamine tänapäeva viiulikunstis“).

Since 1973 she works as a violin teacher at Tallinn Music High School which from 2022 is known as Tallinn School of Music and Ballet. During 1978–1980 she was a quartet teacher at the Tallinn State Conservatory. From 1991 she works as a violin teacher at the Department of Classical Music Performance at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Her notable students include names such as Helen Västrik, Mihkel Kerem, and Annemari Ainomäe.

She has performed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Riga, Sweden, and various other concert halls in Estonia. Her more noteworthy ensemble partners have been Helin Kapten, Riina Joller, Ivo Sillamaa, Kristiina Hoidre, Rolv Uusväli, Ivo Juul and Jaan Õun, Nora Lūse and Andris Arnicāns from Riga and Anna Balakerskaja from Moscow.

She has also premiered new works for example Mihkel Kerem’s Violin Sonata No. 1, 4 Pieces for Violin and Cello, Variations on the Theme of Paganini for violin and bassoon, String Quartet No. 3 and No. 4. She has also recorded at the Estonian Radio (ER) and Estonian TV (ETV).
