International New Music Festival NYYD 2009 on October 20 to 25 in Tallinn


 

From October 20 to 25, the 11th International New Music Festival NYYD will take place in Tallinn. This year's festival is focusing on music theatre and multimedia projects. The tradition of guest composers this year will be continued by German composer Heiner Goebbels and Georges Aperghis from France.
As a part of festival’s tradition, meetings and masterclasses will take place as well. On October 20 at 4 pm, Georges Aperghis's creations will be presented at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, on October 22 at 10 am, singing masterclass by Donatienne Michel-Dansac will take place at the same place and on October 24 at 12 pm, meeting with Heiner Goebbels will be held at the Kanut’s Guild Hall.

Both guest composers – Heiner Goebbels, as well as Georges Aperghis, will be represented in the festival by their multimedia projects: on Wednesday, October 21 at 7 pm Machinations by Georges Aperghis will be performed by IRCAM’s ensemble (Paris) in Theatre NO99, and on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 at 7 pm, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne (Switzerland) will play Eraritjaritjaka by Heiner Goebbels in Tallinn Salme Cultural Centre.
In addition to the two preceding, on Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22 at 9:30 pm, London vocal ensemble The Shout (Melanie Pappenheim and Rebecca Askew) will perform Orlando Gough’s chamber opera Flam at the Kanut’s Guild Hall.

Estonian composers, performers, dancers and artists are represented through two commissioned works of the festival: on Tuesday, October 19, chamber opera Indiate uurimine by Märt-Matis Lill will be premiered at the Von Krahl Theatre (performers: chamber choir Voces Musicales, Taavi Tampuu, Mati Turi et al, libretto by Jan Kaus, musical director Risto Joost, director Mart Koldits), and on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 at 9:30 pm dance performance Harmony by Mart Kangro and Taavi Kerikmäe, will be first performed by Ensemble U: at the Kanut’s Guild Hall.

Mari Vihmand’s opera Formula of Love (2008) will be played at the Estonian National Opera on Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23 at 7 pm.

The first NYYD-Festival was held in 1991. Since then the festival has fulfilled the aim of presenting new directions in contemporary musical composition, performing the best new works by Estonian authors and composers from abroad, offering world-class interpretation art and generating a variety of partnerships.
Over the years, Estonian top interpreters and music collectives, including the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Estonian National Opera, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Cyber Studio, Ensemble U:, chamber choir Voces Musicales, Reval Ensemble, Weekend Guitar Trio, EAMT Electronic Music Studio have repeatedly stepped up in the NYYD-Festival. Since the festival in 1993, one of the internationally most successful new-music collectives of Estonia – NYYD Ensemble – has grown from chamber ensemble of young artists, led by Olari Elts.

The 11th NYYD-Festival is organized by the Estonian State Concert Agency and festival’s artistic directors are Erkki-Sven Tüür and Madis Kolk.
