Cyrillus Kreek Music Days will open the Nargen Festival

From June 1 to 6, Cyrillus Kreek Music Days will take place in Haapsalu. The aim of the event is to introduce and popularise work of Estonian choir composer Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962). Festival consists of three concerts in Haapsalu Dome Church where the performers will be Nargen Opera Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra under the conducting of Tõnu Kaljuste, ensembles Strand and Heinavanker.

The opening concert of Kreek Music Days entitled Cyrillus and Peeter or how the folk tunes collected by Peeter Süda found their way into the music of Cyrillus Kreek will take place on June 1 at 6 pm. The programme consists of Kreek's Musica Sacra, Chromatic Suite, arrangements of folk chorales and Süda's organ works. Performers will be organist Ene Salumäe, Nargen Opera Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra with Tõnu Kaljuste conducting. Additionally, Anu Kõlar tells about friendship and common endeavours of Kreek and Süda, Riina Roose reads excerpts from personal correspondence of two composers. Concert is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of organ composer Peeter Süda (1883-1920).

Ensemble Strand, staffed by Sofia Joons, Meelika Hainsoo, Mall Ney and Robert Jürjendal will give a concert Kreek's Wanderings in Rannarootsi on June 5 at 6 pm.

On June 6 at 6 pm, evening of Kreek's songs and folk chorales will begin with ensemble Heinavanker.

Cyrillus Kreek Music Days in Haapsalu are the opening event of the Nargen Festival held from June 1 to August 31 which includes several cultural events in various places in Estonia. Festival initiated by conductor Tõnu Kaljuste presents performances of "Songs of Estonian Men" in Tallinn Kultuurikatel (collaboration of Nargen Opera and Von Krahl Theatre) in June, Estonian premiere of Arvo Pärt's These Words... on the island Naissaar in July, performances of Franz Joseph Haydn opera Il mondo della luna in Viinistu and symphonic concert "Animal Requiem" in Tallinn Zoological Garden in August and many more events.
