Tallinn Chamber Choir's concert "Ecos da Estónia"

30.04.2024
Location: Igreja da Lapa, Porto, Portugal
Time: 21:30

The Tallinn Chamber Choir's concerts "Ecos da Estónia" ("Echoes of Estonia") in Lisbon and Porto provide a cross-section of the rich heritage of Estonian choral music. The program introduces the audience to the works of Estonian choral classics as well as the works of contemporary composers. The unique harmonies, rhythms, and intonations of the sacred and secular choral music in the program paint a versatile picture of the nature and singing traditions of this small northern country.

Tallinn Chamber Choir is an Estonian concert choir with a high level of vocal culture and musical quality. As Estonia's oldest chamber choir, the collective's goal is to preserve and present the heritage of Estonian choral music both at home and abroad. The choir has received numerous recognitions and competition awards for this - the most recent of which are the Grand Prix award at the 2020 Estonian Chamber Choir Festival and the first place in the A-category at the same festival in 2024.

Tallinn Chamber Choir started its activities in 1962 as an experimental choir of the Estonian Composers' Union. In the early years, the task of the choir consisting of professional musicians was to introduce the exciting new works of Estonian composers and to supplement the Estonian Radio's music collection. Therefore, it is no surprise that Tallinn Chamber Choir has been the first choir to perform several works by the most famous Estonian composers, which today have become choral classics.

Today, the choir is comprised of mostly amateur singers among whom you can find representatives of very different fields and walks of life and who are united by their love for choral music.

The Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tallinn Chamber Choir is Heli Jürgenson - a highly renowned Estonian choral conductor who has worked with several professional and amateur choirs during her career.

For almost ten years, Jürgenson worked with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, with whom she received a Grammy nomination for Best Choral Piece in 2022. Today, Heli Jürgenson works not only with the Tallinn Chamber Choir but also with the Opera Choir of the Estonian National Opera. She is also a Member of the Board of the Estonian Choral Association.

Heli Jürgenson has been appointed the artistic director of the next Estonian Song Festival. With nearly 30,000 singers gathering on a single stage, this festival held every four years since 1869 is one of the largest choral events in the world and is listed as UNESCO oral and intangible heritage.

The Assistant conductor of the Tallinn Chamber Choir is Kärolin Tuisk, who obtained a master's degree in conducting in 2021 and has further improved her skills in the master classes of numerous domestic and international top performers. Despite her youth, Kärolin has conducted strong Estonian concert choirs such as the E Stuudio Chamber Choir, the Eller Girls Choir which was named Choir of the Year in 2022, the Veronika Portsmouth Choral Academy Concert Choir and the Tallinn Boys’ Choir.
