Estonian Cultural Days in NYC 2024. The Tormis Legacy: Regilaul in New York. Laulusumm

06.04.2024
Location: Estonian House, New York, USA
Time: 16:00

The music of Veljo Tormis (1930–2017), one of the most important Estonian composers at the end of the 20th century, was profoundly based on the ancient traditional songs of the Estonian people--runic songs (regilaul). One of the goals of his professional life--in which he succeeded--was to restore that music to a central place in Estonian culture. This proved to be of great importance to the Estonian people, who were subjugated by the Soviet Union for some fifty years. Several Estonian composers were influenced by his combination of ancient and contemporary styles.

Our performers are Celia Roose, singing and playing bagpipe and garmon, along with Ants Johanson on the guitar. In the brief documentary The One & Only, Veljo Tormis's companions exemplify the influence they gain from his work, showcasing former Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid and composer Arvo Pärt among others. Tõnu Tormis's digital photo exhibition Isa Ise / Father Himself provides an exceptionally vivid vision through Veljo's character from 1964-2000.

No ticket required.
