Andrus Haav

Andrus Haav began his violin studies at the Kiviõli Children's Music School with Tiina-Mai Arund. He continued his music studies in the violin class of Aino Riikjärv at the Tallinn Music High School, graduating in 1986. In 1993, he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music as a student of Mari Tampere-Bezrodny, and in 1997 he obtained a Master’s degree at the Sibelius Academy in Finland under the supervision of Prof. Igor Bezrodny.

Andrus Haav has been the laureate of the competition Con brio for young musicians (1992) and has won 1st prize at the Second International Heino Eller Violin Competition in Tallinn (1996). He has also participated in the Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition in Odense, Denmark, and the Markneukirchen International Violin Competition in Germany. In 1993, he was selected to participate in the chamber orchestra of young soloists around the world, Fiori Rari, performing in Lugano, Switzerland.

Andrus Haav has been working with the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera since 1996, and since 2000 he has been one of the orchestra’s concertmasters. In addition, he has been working as a concertmaster in the Estonian National Opera Symphony Orchestra since 2006 (including 1997–1999). He has also performed in many orchestras, including being a guest concertmaster of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra several times. He has appeared as a soloist with several symphony orchestras under the direction of such conductors as Eri Klas, Arvo Volmer, Olari Elts, Juha Kangas, Vello Pähn, Paul Mägi and others. Andrus Haav has given numerous chamber concerts with various musicians (trio Andrus Haav – Henry-David Varema – Lauri Väinma, duo Ruth and Andrus Haav, and others) and performed solo recitals with pianists Jelena Fomina, Risto Lauriala, Lauri Väinmaa and Ralf Taal both in Estonia and elsewhere in Europe.

In 1996–2000, Andrus Haav was a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Music. He has also participated in the work of a jury, including the Heino Eller Violin Competition in Tallinn (2008).

Andrus Haav performs on a violin made by Auguste Sébastien Bernadel (Père) in 1830–1840, which is kindly on loan from the Estonian Foundation of Musical Instruments.
