Aadu Regi 95

On November 3, the oldest member of Estonian Composers’ Union Aadu Regi celebrates his 95th birthday. Regi’s jubilee concerts will take place on November 9 in the hall of Estonian Ministry of Education and Research in Tartu and on November 10 in Tartu University Assembly Hall.

Composer, clarinetist and conductor Aadu Regi was born on November 3, 1912 in Tallinn. From 1930–1935 Regi studied clarinet with Bernhard Lukk at the Tallinn Conservatoire. From 1930 he has been active as a professional musician and has been involved in activities of many musical collectives. Aadu Regi has conducted symphony orchestras of Theatre Vanemuine and Tartu University, Heino Eller Tartu Music School Symphony Orchestra and Wind Band Tartu, also he has been a general conductor of wind orchestras at national song festivals. Regi has been a long-time clarinet and conducting teacher at Heino Eller Tartu Music School and also has been pedagogue in Finland. Aadu Regi has written mainly music for wind orchestras, as well chamber music and music for theatre plays. He has published books of methods of teaching and written memoirs „About music and the rest” (2000). Aadu Regi is the citizen of honour of Tartu city (2005) and the cavalier of The Order of the White Star (2004).

On November 2 at 5 p.m., the CD “Aadu Regi 95 – Greetings, young friends” will be presented in Tartu Public Library. The CD consists of concert recordings of music by Aadu Regi, his teachers and students, performed by Vanemuise Symphony Orchestra, Wind Band Tartu, Clarinet Choir of Elva Clarinet Summer and others, conductor being Aadu Regi among others.The CD material was collected and compiled by Regi’s student and conductor Margus Kasemaa.

On November 9 at 6 p.m. the “The Concert of 95th Jubilee of Maestro Aadu Regi” will take place in the hall of Estonian Ministry of Education and Research, where Wind Band Tartu and various ensembles and soloists will greet the maestro.

On November 10 at 11 a.m. “Clarinet day – Aadu Regi 95” in Tartu I Music School will start. Masterclasses will be held by Aadu Regi, Toomas Vavilov, Vahur Vurm, Vello Sakkos, Margus Vahemets and Madis Kari. Jubilee concert with participatory of all participants will start at 6 p.m. in Tartu University Assembly Hall.
