New chamber operas by Tõnu Kõrvits in Von Krahl Theatre

New chamber operas by Tõnu Kõrvits, “Fire-garden” and “My Swans, my Thoughts” will be premiered on April 20 in Von Krahl Theatre, Tallinn.

New operas are based on extraordinary life of Estonian poetess Marie Heiberg (1890–1942). Mentally ill Heiberg spent about 20 years of her life in hospital. In her lifetime two books of her verses were published, the best of which are full of life and sincerity. Some of Heiberg’s verses are included in the opera librettos written by Maarja Kangro.

By the words of Tõnu Kõrvits and Maarja Kangro, the two operas do not tell a tragic story about crazy poetess, “it is a story about desire of light and truth, about the powerful wish to apprehend the secrets.”

Kõrvits’ chamber operas will be staged in cooperation of Von Krahl Theatre and Nargen Opera. The performers are Kädy Plaas, Helen Lokuta, Nargen Opera Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste. The paintings of Merike Estna are integrated in the production.

Kõrvits’ operas will be performed in von Krahl Theatre only four days, on April 20, 21, 22 and 23.
