13th Internatinoal Tartu Early Music Festival Orient et Occident

From October 2 to 5, International Tartu Early Music Festival Orient et Occident takes place for the 13th time. Festival combines early European, primarily Medieval culture and Oriental cultures. Festival offers different concerts, lectures and youth program and presents performers from Estonia, Sri Lanka, Russia, Iran, Denmark and Czech.

Six concerts will take place in Tartu St. John’s Church, Tartu Church of All St. Alexanders, Veski Villa, White Hall of University of Tartu History Museum and University of Tartu Ceremonial Hall. Mahinda Seneviratne, Kandiah Sivapalaratnam and Pathamchaly Pathmalathan from Sri Lanka will perform North-Indian (Hindustan) and South-Indian (Carnatic) classical music; Persian classical music will be performed by Iranian Mohammad Rasoul and Mohssen Hossein; the program of ensemble ALBA’s (Denmark) concert will consist of Italian Trecento Music; Russian ensemble Russki Lad will perform Russian Orthodox Chant and FA Schola from Estonia Gregorian Chants and improvisations in early European modes.

Besides the concerts, festival also offers youth program entitled as Songs of Pilgrimage and lectures. Participants of youth program will become acquainted with different folk songs (including Bohemian, Estonian) and medevial instruments. The program will be led by Tõnu Sepp and František Behounek (Czech). Five lectures will introduce music from Sri Lanka, India and Persia, Russian Orthodox Chant and pilgrimages. Festival café offers live music evenings during the festival.
