World premiere of Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Clarinet Concerto in Finland

On September 4 and 5, Erkki-Sven Tüür’s Clarinet Concerto Peregrinus Ecstaticus will be first performed in Helsinki Music Centre. The work was commissioned by Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and it will be performed by clarinettist Christoffer Sundqvist together with Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Tüür’s piece will be followed by Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, with the participation of The Helsinki Music Centre Choir. Concert will be conducted by the orchestra’s new chief conductor Hannu Lintu and will be broadcast live on Klassikaraadio on September 4 at 7 pm.

The principal clarinet of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Christoffer Sundqvist, has won many international competitions and been an inspiration for several Finnish composers. He will be the soloist also at the Estonian premiere of the same piece on March 28, 2014 in Estonia Concert Hall, Tallinn, where Hannu Lintu will conduct Estonian National Symphony Orchestra.

Erkki-Sven Tüür: „The title of the concerto – Ecstatic Pilgrim – guides our interpretation of the character of the soloist. Let’s imagine the pilgrim’s voyage in search of his goal, full of obstructions and danger, his spirit and drive alternating with exhaustion and weariness; overcoming physically discernable difficulties as well as spiritual battles....”
