The Year of European Capital of Culture will finish with the premiere of Margo Kõlar’s “Song of the Tower Bells”

For the final day of European Capital of Culture, Margo Kõlar has created concert for church bells entitled Song of the Tower Bells which performance takes place on the Tallinn Freedom Square on December 22 at 20.11. Bells of ten churches takes part of the performance of this unique work played by 30 musicians including professional percussionists, students of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and Tallinn music schools, and church carilloneurs. Video projection inspired by the work on the facade of St. John’s Church has created by Taavi Varm.

Before Kõlar’s work, at 7 pm, concert O ‘ Adonai will take place in Tallinn St. John’s Church where Tõnis Mägi, vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis, Robert Jürjendal (guitars) and Old Town Music House Girls’ Choir will perform.

On Thursdsay, December 22, another first performance – Das Ende Beginnt for piano, cello, bassoon, percussion and tape by Ardo Ran Varres will take place at the final event of European Capital of Culture 2011 Tallinn. The concert is held in Lennusadam, the performers are Anto Õnnis, Kristjan Kungla, Siim Selis and Aare Tammesalu.

The final concert of the year of European Capital of Culture, the Christmas concert The Beauty of Being in the Moment follows the Song of the Tower Bells at 8.30 pm at the Freedom Square. The mixed choir of Estonian Public Broadcasting under the direction of Hirvo Surva will perform Christmas songs by Urmas Sisask, Tõnis Kõrvits, Olav Ehala and many others, while Freedom Square will be submerged in a shimmering sea of candlelight. Organisers ask everyone to bring their own candles along with them as well so as to add to the glow of the sea of culture on the square. The final ceremony of Capital of Culture will culminate with the fire sculpture “2011” on Harjumägi.
