NYYD’05 introduces Estonian contemporary music

For the ninth time, the International New Music Festival NYYD presents the overview of European and Estonian contemporary music. The resident composers of the festival are the co-founder of French “spectral school” Tristan Murail and the Australian composer and viola player Brett Dean. The festival is spiced up with a concert programme “WARP Works and 20th century masters”, the joint project of London Sinfonietta and electronic club-music orientated record company Warp, as well as with the chamber multimedia opera by Dutch composer Michel van der Aa. The programme of Nyyd Festival presents new works both by composition students of Estonian Academy of Music up to acknowledged composers, such as Erkki-Sven Tüür, Helena Tulve and Toivo Tulev.

On 13th October 2005, the concert of Electronic Music Studio of Estonian Academy of Music at Rotermann Salt Storage, presented the electronic and multimedia works by Pille Kangur, Mirjam Tally, Malle Maltis, Kaido Suss, Vootele Aer and Hans-Gunther Lock. At the opening concert of the festival Nyyd Ensemble performed the “Abysses” (2003) for flute and ensemble by Helena Tulve. The same day, the Gothenburg Combo Guitar Duo premiered the “I have seen seen” of Mirjam Tally at the Canute Guild Hall.

The concert programme of Ensemble U: (15th October) presented Tatiana Kozlova’s ensemble work “Circles” inspired by the work of Pierre Schaffer and Orient-influenced work “My Weeping Voice is the Wind of Fall” by Märt-Matis Lill. Ensemble “Les Temps Modernes” performed the works of Tristan Murail, Gérard Grisey and the premiered “Give us a Long Laughter on the Brief Summer” by Mari Vihmand.

Tallinn Chamber Orchestra performed the work by Erkki- Sven Tüür ”Path and Traces” – an example of composer’s “vectorial method”. The piece is dedicated to Arvo Pärt and was commissioned on occasion of the re-opening of St. John’s Church in Tartu, Estonia. The German vocal group Singer Pur will present the music of Tõnis Kaumann “Mi lagnero tacendo” (“I Complain in Silence”).

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Paul Hillier will perform the large scale choral composition “Songs” by Toivo Tulev on the texts of the Song of Songs and Saint Juan de la Cruz. The Canadian Quasar Saxophone Quartet will premiere the “Ceremony” by Timo Steiner on the 21st of October and Reval Ensemble will present the premieres of works by Tõnu Kõrvits, Margo Kõlar, Tõnis Kaumann and Ülo Krigul on the 22nd of October.
