Mikk Murdvee

In 1998, Mikk Murdvee graduated from Tallinn Music High School with Niina Murdvee and Harald Aasa. In 1998–1999, he studied at the Estonian Academy of Music and from 1999 to 2005 at Sibelius Academy in Finland in the violin class of Mari Tampere.
In 2002-2007, he also studied conducting at Sibelius Academy under Leif Segerstam, Atso Almila, Jorma Panula et al. Murdvee has participated in the violin master classes of Yair Kless, Igor Bezrody, Anatoli Reznikovsky and many others.

Mikk Murdvee has gained recognition at several competitions, both national and international. He won the second prize from the young string players competition (1997) and the third prize from the Third Heino Eller International Violin Competition in Tallinn (2001). Piano trio Fratres – Mikk Murdvee (violin), Kristjan Saar (cello) and Sten Lassmann (piano) – won the second prize from the Jurmala competition in Latvia (2000), two special prizes from contest festival “Con Brio 2000” and the diploma from the Brahms Competition in Gdansk.

As a conductor Mikk Murdvee has worked with many orchestras, including Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of Sibelius Academy, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the City Orchestras of Pärnu, Haapsalu, Oulu, Lappeenranta and Seinäjoki, Pori Sinfonietta, Heinola Sinfonietta etc.

In 2007, Murdvee made his debut at the Estonian National Opera for what he received Estonian National Culture Foundation’s award “Debut of the Year 2007”. He has also conducted operas in Pori and Kerava and worked as an assistant conductor in Tampere Opera.

At the moment, Murdvee works as the principal conductor of Helsinki University orchestra Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat.

Besides being a conductor, Mikk Murdvee continues his career as a violinist (soloist, chamber musician, concert master). In his repertoire, there is a special place for Estonian music – he has commissioned and been the first performer of many pieces by Estonian authors (Andrus Kallastu, Mihkel Kerem et al.).
