Matti Reimann

Matti Reimann is an Estonian pianist, renowned both as a chamber musician and solo pianist. He is also a professor at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

Matti Reimann graduated from Tallinn Children Music School on the piano in 1958 and from Tallinn Music School in 1962, where he studied piano with Linda Tamberg (at both schools) and percussion under the guidance of Kristjan Vestre and Kalju Terasmaa. He continued studies at Tallinn State Conservatoire on piano, graduating in 1967 under the guidance of Bruno Lukk. In 1968 Reimann won II prize at the Estonian Pianists´ Competition. In 1967–1969 Reimann developed his skills at Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied piano with Nadežda Golubovskaja and conducting with Nikolai Rabinovitš. In 1975 Reimann furthered studies at Gnessinite Pedagogical Music Institute (later Gnessinite Russian Academy of Music) on chamber music with Valeri Samoljotov, graduating in 1975.

Since 1975 Mati Reimann works at the chamber music department in the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (1979–1990 head of the department, since 1984 docent and 1999 professor). Reimann´s students include among others Egmont Välja, Pärt Tarvas, Lembit Orgse, Elar Kuiv, Mait Meibaum, Kai Ratassepp, Mati Mikalai, Ave Kruup, Mihkel Mattisen, Age Juurikas, Ebe Müntel, Jorma Toots, Ivo Lille, Leonora Palu, Nele-Eva Steinfeld, Ivi Ots etc.

Since 1963 Matti Reimann has given solo concerts at several past USSR cities as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Baku, Kyiv and also abroad including Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Germany and Finland. He has performed several piano concertos with renowned conductors as Jüri Alperten, Viktor Barsov, Veronika Dudarova, Karl Eliasberg, Neeme and Vallo Järvi, Eri Klas, Peeter Lilje, Roman Matsov, Nikolai Rabinovitš, Saulius Sondeckis, Vladislav Tšernušenko, Aleksandr Dmitrjevi and Arvo Volmer. Besides classic period works, Reimann´s repertoire comprises piano concertos by Artur Lemba, Eugen Kapp, Ester Mägi and Harri Ots. Matti Reimann has participated at several chamber music collectives, long-time collaboration has Reimann with his brother, Tõnu Reimann, with who he has given over 2000 lecture-concerts and participated also at telecasts. As a chamber musician Reimann has also collaborated with Jaan Õun, Hannes Altrov, Imbi Kuuse and Toomas Velmet.

Matti Reimann has organized several international chamber music festivals at music academies and participated in several competition jury, he has also been chairman of the National Examinations at Latvian Academy of Music. Reimann has written articles for the local culture newspaper „Sirp“ and won the prize for music critics in 1992 and 2006. Matti Reimann has been the first performer of several Estonian composers works such as Villem Reimann, Anatoli Garšnek, Jaan Rääts, Raimo Kangro. He has recorded over 100 works as a soloist and chamber musician for Estonian Public Broadcast. His performs at the compilation vinyl album „Estonian Piano Music II“ (Tallinn Recording Studio, 1983) and he is a soloist in Estonian composer Artur Lemba’s Piano Concertos No. 1 and 2 on Lemba's portrait vinyl album (Melodija, 1986) and Lemba’s Piano Concerto No. 1 on a compilation CD of music by Lepo Sumera, Eduard Tubin and Artur Lemba (Estonian Radio, 1998).
