Martin Levald

Cellist and composer Martin Levald studied cello in Tallinn Conservatoire in the class of Raimond Bööcke and August Karjus (1934–1941) as well as in Moscow Conservatoire in the class of Svyatoslav Knushevitski (1943–1944). Levald played cello in the orchestra of Theatre Estonia (1936–1939) and State Broadcast Symphony Orchestra (1940–1941). He was Musical Director and soloist in the Philharmony of Tartary (1941–1942), soloist of Estonian SSR State Cultural Ensembles in Yaroslavl (1942–1944) and concertmaster of the cello group of the orchestra of Theatre Estonia (1944–1973).

Martin Levald has written works for symphony orchestra, cello and piano as well as solo songs. He has been ascribed the title of Estonian SSR Merited Artist (1965).
