Chamber Choir Voces Musicales celebrates its 20th birthday with music from beloved Estonian composers. Arvo Pärt’s “Adam's Lament” and “Silouan's Song” will be performed, and “Kiituselaul” (Song of Praise) by a young Estonian composer Pärt Uusberg will be premiered.

Arvo Pärt's “Silouan’s Song” – the concert starts with tintinnabuli music characteristic to one of the most known composers of the world. Silouan was a monk from Mount Athos, whose texts Arvo Pärt has also used when creating one of his most significant pieces from the recent years – “Adam’s Lament”.

Arvo Pärt's “Adam’s Lament” is a piece with a deeper musical message for a vocal ensemble, mixed choir and string orchestra. The texts in Church Slavonic describe Adam’s pain for the paradise lost.

Pärt Uusberg's “Kiituselaul“ (Song of Praise) (premiere) is a bright and joyful piece which texts include Ernst Enno’s poems in beautiful Estonian and sections from psalms of David (translations into Estonian by Vello Salo and Indrek Hirv). Pärt Uusberg was a member of Voces Musicales for years and he dedicates his new piece for the choir’s 20th birthday.

The concert will be conducted by Risto Joost who currently holds the title of Estonian Musician of the Year.

The semi-professional chamber choir Voces Musicales has become a high-level choir with an established and unique place in the Estonian music life. Risto Joost convened the choir on 19 September 1999, he is still the choir’s artistic consultant. Voces Musicales has a significant place in Estonia’s music scene – it introduces pieces that for their complexity have often been rejected from the programmes of many Estonian choirs. The repertoire of Voces Musicales includes works in diverse genres from Renaissance polyphony (Tallis, Victoria, Palestrina) to contemporary music, and also many important classical repertoire pieces. Voces Musicales’s high level concerts were also recognised In 2015 when the choir received the annual music award of the Estonian Culture Endowment.
