Hannes Altrov

b. January 2, 1944 Põltsamaa

Clarinetist and pedagogue Hannes Altrov started his musician carrier in the Põltsamaa Music School. In 1968 he graduated from Tallinn Conservatory with Juhan Kaljaspoolik. In 1974 he postgraduate from the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow with Ivan Mozgovenko. He has also participated in Jacques Lancellot classes in Paris.

In 1964–1974 Altrov was a clarinet teacher in Tallinn Music School. Since 1974 he has been teaching at the Estonian Academy of Music. His best known students are Vahur Vurm, Toomas Vavilov, Ott Maaten, Margus Vahemets, Meelis Vind, Edmunds Altmanis, Jüri Millistfer, Madis Kari, Ivar Säde and Ringo Vimmsaare. From 1967 Hannes Altrov has been working in Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and since 1977 he is the principal clarinetist there.

Hannes Altrov won second prize at the Competition for Estonian Woodwind Players in 1970 and third prize at Praha Spring Competition in 1974.

He has performed in Estonia but also in many foreign countries as a soloist and with many ensembles and orchestras. He has recorded in quantities music by Estonian composers (Artur Kapp, Els Aarne, Ester Mägi, Lembit Veevo, Hillar Kareva, Arvo Pärt, Aarne Männik, René Eespere and Rein Rannap), classics (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and Carl Maria von Weber) and contemporary music (Igor Stravinski, Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith) at Estonian Radio.

Altrov has given many master classes and since year 1999 he has participated in many competitions as a member of jury.

He was been given the honorary title of ESSR Honored Worker in Arts in 1981.
