Lauri Metsvahi

Lauri Metsvahi began studying music at Tallinn Music High School in 1996. He graduated cum laude in 2008 with classical percussion as his main instrument and Kristjan Mäeots as his teacher. After that, Lauri continued studying simultaneously at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre as a student of classical percussion with Rein Roos and Odd Kyrre Alsvik and at the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School as a student of pop-jazz drumming with Andrus Lillepea.

Since 2011, Lauri Metsvahi has studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. There he obtained a master’s degree in orchestral percussion in 2015, tutored by Joakim Anterot, Mika Takehara and Niklas Brommare, and a diploma in solo percussion in 2018 with Daniel Berg and Håkon Kartveit as his teachers.

Since 2019, Lauri Metsvahi works as a percussionist in the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Swedish Wind Ensemble (2016–2019), where he became the section leader in 2017. He often performs with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Västerås Sinfonietta, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and other Swedish orchestras. In 2016, Lauri joined the Baltic Youth Philharmonic, and in 2012–2014 he toured with the European Union Youth Orchestra as the first-ever Estonian percussionist.

Lauri Metsvahi has worked as a freelance musician with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Estonian National Opera Orchestra, Nordic Symphony Orchestra, YXUS Ensemble, PaukenfEst and in many other projects.
