Reet Sukk

Member of Association of Estonian Professional Musicians since 2001
Founding member of Recorder Association ERTA-Estonia

Reet Sukk got into the early music world by chance. Reet was born in Viljandi, and because during her musical studies an early music pioneer Tõnu Sepp was working there, she started to play Tõnu's early music ensemble Viljandi Linnakapell and to blow all sorts of old „tubes". A significant role was also played by Viljandi Early Music Festivals with colorful participants and new ideas. Because it was still not possible to study early music instruments in music schools, Reet had to continue with modern flute in Tallinn Georg Ots Music School and later at Tallinn State Conservatory. Luckily the traverso class was opened in a few years in the Conservatory and she could graduate as a traverso player.

A few years later she met Wilbert Hazelzet who strongly supported Reet's desire to continue studying in the Netherlands. In 1996 she was accepted at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where she studied traverso with Wilbert Hazelzet and recorder with Jeanette van Wingerden. Besides that there were countless chamber music lessons with very inspiring teachers (Wieland Kuijken, Kate Clark, Ton Koopman, Marion Verbrüggen, Peter van Heyghen et al.), workshops in medieval music, classicism, early music teaching, orchestra projects etc. These three years in the Netherlands was extremely colorful and inspiring period and gave many creative and personal contacts all over the world.

After returning Estonia Reet Sukk has mainly focused on concert projects with Taavi-Mats Utt in early music studio Cantores Vagantes, but has also taken part in other early music projects and has frequently performed as a soloist with the baroque orchestra. In 2002 the first CD „Music at the meeting of two worlds” with music from the 1st half of the 17th century, was released. The second CD „Music from the nordic lands” with Rococo music (Johan Helmich Roman, Johann Gottfreid Müthel, Johann George Tromlitz, etc.) was released in 2013. This CD was elected to the Estonian Music Awards 2014 nomination and elected as the best chamber music CD.

Reet Sukk teaches traverso and recorder at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Georg Ots Music School and Music School of Old Town Educational College. She is the founding member of the Recorder Association ERTA-Estonia and is training regularly recorder teachers.
