Valle-Rasmus Roots

Valle-Rasmus Roots is an Estonian cellist, currently completing his master’s degree at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) with Prof. Henry-David Varema. Roots began his cello studies at the Tallinn Music High School with Mart Laas in 2001 which he graduated in 2013. During his studies, he has also been a student of Prof. Marko Ylönen at the EAMT and Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (2017–18), and Prof. Wolfgang Boettcher at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin, 2015–16). Since 2017 Valle-Rasmus Roots is also studying conducting with Jüri Alperten at the EAMT.

Valle-Rasmus Roots has taken part in national and international competitions. In 2018, he was awarded 1st Prize at the Baltic String Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania. He is the laureate of the Competition of the Estonian National String Players in 2011 and 2013 as well as of the Estonian Chamber Music Competition „In Corpore“ with Auli Lonks in 2015. In 2016 Roots became the laureate of the Yamaha scholarship.

Valle-Rasmus Roots has taken part in many mastercourses and festivals, including Astona International (2011–2013). He has participated in the masterclasses by cellists Wolfgang Boettcher, David Geringas, Nicholas Jones, Francis Gouton, Marko Ylönen, and others.

Roots has been a soloist with Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Tallinn Music High School Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra of Baden-Baden, and EAMT Symphony Orchestra. Valle-Rasmus Roots is also active in all kinds of chamber music groups. He is often performing with pianist Sten Lassmann.

Valle-Rasmus Roots plays a cello by Italian master Celeste Farotti from 1904, kindly on loan from Estonian Foundation of Musical Instruments.
