Hans Hindpere

Hans Hindpere is known as a prolific composer of popular music and songs for children and youth. Remarkable has been his diverse activity as a pianist and ensemble leader.

Hans Hindpere has graduated from the Tallinn Music School in music theory in 1958 and the Tallinn State Conservatory in composition under Anatoli Garshnek in 1963.

Hindpere has worked as a music director in Rakvere Theatre (1948–1949), editor of music broadcasts in Estonian Television (1962–1965), artistic director in Jaan Kreuks Youth Culture Palace (1965–1967), pedagogue in Tallinn University of Pedagogics (1968–1998), additionally being active as a concert master in ESSR State Philharmonics and Theatre Estonia. From 1980 to 1992, he was the chairman of youth section of the Estonian Composers’ Union. As a pianist, he has played keyboards in ensembles Elektron and Varioola, accompanied most of the wellknown Estonian popular singers of his time, directed vocal ensembles Meloodia (1961–1971), Karikakar (1975–1986) and Vanad sõbrad (since 1975).

The body of Hindpere’s oeuvre is formed by popular songs and children’s songs both for choirs and soloists written mainly on texts by Otto Roots, Heldur Karmo and Helgi Muller. Over 1000 works in all. Hindpere has written music for nearly 40 plays, but also for films. His songs frequently have been performed in national song celebrations. Hindpere’s songs and instrumental pieces have won numerous prizes in composition competitions. His children’s songs have been released on two tape cassettes: Loomade karneval [Carnival of Animals] (H. Hindpere, 1999) and Lastelaulud [Children’s Songs] (1996) and in eightfold compendium Lauluredel [Ladder of Songs] published by Muusika (1995–2003).
