Herman Känd

Composer and organist Herman Känd graduated from Tallinn Concervatory in organ under August Topman and composition under Artur Kapp in 1930. He was active as an organist, music teacher and choral conductor in Võru, Räpina and Tallinn, also was a general director of local song days. In 1944, he escaped to Germany where he worked as an organist and wrote music critics. From 1950, Känd lived in USA, where he was active as an organist in Fitchburg Lutheran congregation.

Hermann Känd’s oeuvre consists of symphonic and vocal-symphonic works, chamber music, organ pieces, choral songs and opera "Kalevipoeg" based on Estonian national epic.
